Photo & Video Doctor ("the app") is built by an independent developer, the maker of Music Library Doctor. This page explains what data the app and this website handle, and what they deliberately never touch.
Your photos and videos stay on your computer
Scanning, comparing, previews and clean-up all run on your own computer. No photo, video, thumbnail, file name or folder path is ever sent to us or to anyone else. When you scan your Photos library, the app reads a temporary copy of the library's database on your Mac and changes nothing. Items are removed only when you confirm: files go to the Trash and Photos items to "Recently Deleted" (or to an album you delete yourself), so you can restore them.
What our server stores
The app talks to our own server (photovideodoctor.com) for licensing, the free allowance, error reports and, only when you ask, problem reports. It stores:
- A device identifier: a one-way hash derived from your computer, which cannot be reversed into a serial number or hardware ID.
- Device details, sent whenever the app already contacts the server: the operating system and its version, the app version, your system language, the app language and whether you picked it yourself, and when the device was first and last seen. There is no separate, continuous connection.
- For Pro licenses: your order number, the device identifiers it is active on, a label such as "Photo & Video Doctor · macOS", and when a device was removed — to apply the limit of one computer per operating system at a time for each license.
- An opening log: each time the app starts, the date, the app version and the operating system. It is kept per device, whether or not you buy Pro, so we can see which versions are in use.
- For the free version: how many files a device has cleaned with the free allowance, and the allowance tokens issued, so "Undo" can give them back.
- Error reports: when the app crashes, closes unexpectedly, hits an error or can't move a file during clean-up, it sends a short report — the stage, the error type and code, a cleaned-up message, and for clean-up the file type (for example "heic"). Before sending, the app removes file names, folder paths, your user name, email addresses and license keys; the server removes them a second time. Reports go automatically and can't be turned off in the app, because they contain nothing personal; if you object, email us and we will delete your device's reports.
- Problem reports: only when you choose "Report a problem", the app's recent log lines (cleaned the same way) and your note. The app shows you exactly what will be sent before you confirm.
- Daily counts: downloads, free clean-ups, checkout pages opened and licenses issued, counted per day and country. These are totals; they are not linked to a device or a person.
We never store your IP address. Your country is read from your connection to show the right regional price, to add to the daily counts above and to store with your device's details; we never ask your computer for it.
Payments and your email address
Purchases are handled by Lemon Squeezy, the merchant of record, which processes payment, tax and invoicing under its own privacy policy. Lemon Squeezy tells our server about each sale and refund. We keep your order number, email address, name, country, price, discount code and order status, because your Pro license is tied to your email address: there is no license key to keep track of. When you choose "I already bought Pro" on another computer, we email you a confirmation link and a 6-digit code for that computer, and keep the request (device identifier, system type, language) for a few days. These emails are sent from support@photovideodoctor.com through our email provider.
The email address you enter when you go to checkout is saved even if you don't complete the purchase, together with your device identifier. If a purchase stays unfinished, we may send you one reminder at most, by hand; nothing is sent automatically. The "Don't write to me again" link in that email stops it for good: we then keep only a one-way hash of your address, so that it stays blocked.
How long we keep it
- Single error reports: 90 days (we keep only an anonymous count per error type after that).
- Problem reports: 30 days.
- Order records: as long as the license exists. For refunded orders, your email address and name are erased one year after the refund.
- Unfinished purchases (the email entered at checkout): one year.
- Opening log: one year.
- Device details: erased once a device hasn't been seen for two years.
- Our log of license actions (issued, device added or removed, email corrected): two years.
- Encrypted backups: 90 days.
Updates
When it starts, the app asks photovideodoctor.com whether a newer version exists, sending only its own version number. Updates are signed; the app installs one only when you choose to.
This website
No cookies and no third-party trackers or analytics tools. The page asks our server for the regional price; a download is added to the daily count for your country, nothing else is recorded.
Your choices
To remove a device from your license, use "Deactivate" in the app. To have the records for your order, your email address or a device (including its error and problem reports) deleted, or for any question about this policy, email support@photovideodoctor.com from the address you bought with, or tell us your order number. We delete them within 30 days; Lemon Squeezy keeps its own payment records as the law requires.
